STRIKE ZONE SOFTBALL CLINIC

Strike Zone Softball coaches and numerous WPVL Nanaimo Breakers coaches will be hosting a softball clinic at Franklyn St Gym (421 Franklyn St) Feb 11 to March 12. The sessions are on Sundays from 8:45am to 11am. All ages are welcome to attend. The drop in cost is $10 per session or free if player registers with WPVL Nanaimo Breakers Softball. Coaches are encouraged to attend and observe for free. Strike Zone aims to teach the fundamentals of softball and during this clinic the coaches will be focusing on pitching and batting. Registration will be available onsite each Sunday during the clinic for everyone wishing to register in person. You can register your child and not attend the clinic. The Learn to Play program is endorsed by Softball BC and is a program that teaches children the sport of softball in a fun, revolutionary, action packed way. Nanaimo Breakers 97

Nanaimo Breakers, Pee Wee 97 girls rep softball team hosted a one day jamboree at Wheatsheaf Sports Complex. Six teams participated in the event, North Vancouver, North Delta and Ladner came from the mainland and Penninsula and Strawberry Vale came from Victoria and joined the Nanaimo Breakers. All the teams played 3 games each. It was a huge success! The weather was fantastic and the fields were in great shape. All the teams said it was a well organized, great competition and everybody promised to be back next year. Nanaimo Breakers won 2 games and lost one. A great way to start the softball season!

The Come Back Kids!

The Ramsay Lampman Rhodes Nanaimo Breakers 95 softball team’s 2010 season culminated at the 2010 Bantam B Provincials in Port Alberni.

Prior to the Provincial tournament the team worked hard to prepare, putting in intense effort in 35 practices and 14 exhibition games in Nanaimo, Port Alberni, & Parksville. They also participated in 4 tournaments in BC and 3 in Washington State. After more than 2500 kms of driving, 16 hours on the ferry, and 48 games, the team was ready for the big weekend.

Coach Bryce Johnson’s initial goal for the first year Bantam team was to finish top 8 at Provincials but by tournament number three it became apparent to him that with continued effort and drive, this team had the potential to medal at Provincials. The team improved throughout the season, medaling in the last 5 tournaments, winning one gold, three silver, and one bronze, and showing the heart and determination needed to achieve this goal.

The RLR Nanaimo Breakers 95 participated in the 2010 Bantam B Provincials in Port Alberni, July 16-18. As a first year Bantam team, the players faced some stiff competition, but through their perseverance and never-say-die attitude, they became known at the tournament as the “Giant Killers”.

The team went 4-0 in the round robin portion of the tournament. In Game 3, the team was down 9-2 going into the final inning. The team dug deep and scored an astonishing 8 runs in the top of the inning to go ahead 10-9 and held their opponents to steal the win in the most amazing come back of the tournament.

The team moved into the playoff round featuring the top eight teams and were handed their first loss at the hands of SSWR Thunder, the eventual bronze medal winners. In the next game, the RLR Nanaimo Breakers 95 were tied 5-5 with the North Shore Stars heading in to the 6th inning. The Breakers scored 2, but North Shore tied them again in the top of the 7th. Again, the Breakers refused to give in, and stole one run in the bottom of the 7th to take the win.

The team then faced Cordova Bay, the top ranked Vancouver Island team in a must win elimination game. Down 5-2 with time running out, again the team fought back to tie the game in the last inning. The Breakers gave up one run in the international tie breaker inning, but stole two back to take the win in an intense, emotional battle.

Next up the Breakers battled the second seeded Richmond Islanders 94 and were down 7-0 heading into the fifth inning. Again the “come back kids” scored 5 runs in the 5th and 4 more in the top of the 6th to take a 9-7 lead. Strong bats at the top of the order allowed the Islanders to come back and score three to take the win in the bottom of the 6th, eliminating the highly respected and amazing “Giant Killers”. The team finished 4th in the province and 1st for Island teams in an emotion-filled weekend with 6 wins and 2 losses.

Coach Johnson, who has been coaching fastball for over 10 years, commented that he has never seen a team that displayed the heart and determination shown by these 12 amazing young ladies. In the hearts and minds of many in attendance, this young, first year bantam team showed the character and confidence of gold medal winners.

Congratulations to Charlie Andrews and Dylan Dorsey who played for the Vancouver Island team at the BC Summer Games. The team placed 5th with a 2 and 2 record. Both losses were by 1 run.

Both players also played for Langford at the provincial championships with a 3rd place finish.

The Squirt B 98 Breakers travelled to Newton this past weekend to compete in their first ever Provincials. The girls went 2 and 2 in round robin play but missed advancing to the playoff round by 5 bases touched. Coach George Sampson said he was very proud of the way the girls played this season considering this was their first year of rep ball and can't wait to see what they can do next year. GREAT JOB GIRLS!!!

The Ramsay Lampman Rhodes Nanaimo Breakers 95 team travelled to Kent, WA for a 14U/16U tournament on July 3-4, 2010. This tournament helped the team prepare for their upcoming BC Bantam B Provincial Championship. After two wins and one loss on Saturday the team competed in the Silver pool on Sunday. The girls won 4-0 over the Woodinville Reign 16U team to advance to the championship game against the Surrey Storm. The Breakers were not able to contain Surrey's offense nor solve the Storm's pitcher in losing 7-2. The team had good focus and played well all weekend.

2010 Super Skagit June Invite 14U Champions.

The Ramsay Lampman Rhodes Breakers 95 Bantam B team won the 14U division in Mount Vernon, WA over the weekend of June 19-20, 2010. On Saturday the team played round-robin games against the Rising Stars (won 8-1), Skagit Valley Thunder (lost 6-4), and Baker 14U (won 10-3). The team's 2 wins and 1 loss earned them the 2nd seed for the play-off games. Although the team was the number 2 seed coach Johnson was not pleased with the girls' level of focus and intensity during the round-robin games. The playoff games were single elimination and the girls were losing 1-0 for the first three innings to the Rising Stars in the first playoff game. Although the girls seemed a bit nervous they persevered and got their offense going to win 9-2. In the semi-final game the team again faced Baker 14U. Jamie Belfry provided solid pitching for the Breakers in this game and the team's offense continued from the previous game. Danielle Powell had a grand-slam home run and Hayley Craddock had a three-run home run in the team's 18-2 mercy win after 4 innings. The opponent for the "Gold Medal game" was Skagit Valley Thunder, the number 1 seed and the team that had beat the Breakers on Saturday. There was no question as to the Breakers' focus and intensity for the final game. The offense exploded in the first inning for 14 runs with every player contributing! The next inning the team obtained the one run they needed after providing solid defense behind the stellar pitching of Hayley Craddock to earn the mercy win in two and half innings. Girls, your excellent performance on Sunday was rewarded and appreciated by your coaches and fans!!

The Ramsay Lampman Rhodes Breakers 95 Bantam B girls team travelled to Granite Falls, WA for a tournament on June 12-13. The team took 2nd place overall after going undefeated until the gold medal game. In round robin play the girls won games against Nooksack Thunder (8-0), Granite Falls Tigers (14-2), and Edmonds Starz (4-3). They then played Nooksack Thunder in the semi-final game and came out ahead 7-2. In the gold medal game the girls had a tough third inning when they gave up five runs to the Edmond Starz who went on to win 5-2. The team played well throughout the weekend and never gave up until the last out was called in the gold medal game. Hayley Craddock, Jamie Belfry, and Taylor Sampson provided the team with effective pitching over the weekend. The entire team contributed at the plate at one time or another. Ashley Elliot certainly had the hot bat this weekend as she had several solid hits including a home run. As well the team was quite effective in utilizing the bunt game. Well done girls!

The Breakers 98 Squirt B team travelled to Port Alberni on the weekend of June 5/6 to take part in the annual Squirt Splash Tournament. The girls went undefeated in the tournament bringing home the gold medal after beating the Central Saanich Extreme 12-4 in the final. Great Job Girls!!!

The Ramsay Lampman Rhodes Breakers 95 Bantam B girls team played in the Langford tournament on May 22/23 and brought home Silver medals. The girls opened the tournament with a convincing 16-2 win over Richmond 95. They followed up a 12-9 loss to Cordova Bay 94 with wins over North Delta 94 (10-1) and Langford 94 (8-5). Their 2nd place seeding put them in the gold medal game versus Cordova Bay. Cordova Bay had the hot bats and strong pitching in the final game to win 8-0. The RLR Breakers 95 played very well on the weekend and certainly earned their Silver medals!

The Ramsay Lampman Rhodes Breakers 95 Bantam B girls fastball team was in Port Alberni for a ball tournament on May 15/16. The girls competed very well with everyone contributing at the plate and there were several "all out plays" on defense. It was spectacular to watch! After losing 5-3 to Cordova Bay (the eventual gold medal winners) in the opening game the girls won three games in a row ( 17-3 over View Royal, 7-2 over Fleetwood 94, and 4-1 over Sooke 94) to advance to the semi-finals. The team lost an exciting semi-final game after going to International Tie-Breaker against Duncan. However, the girls pulled together to win the Bronze medal game over Sooke.

The Breakers 95 Bantam B team played in the Tsawwassen tournament on May 1/2. The team had 1 win, 1 tie, and 2 losses in the round-robin games and missed by one spot to advance to the playoff round. The girls showed that they can compete with the older Bantam teams and the first year Bantam teams. Keep up the good ball girls!

The Breakers 97 Pee Wee Girls fastball team played in the North Delta tournament on April 24/25. Coach Mark Murray said the girls played awesome in every game, all the games were very close and could have gone either way. He was quite excited to see how much the girls had improved from the indoor practices and the pre-season outdoor practices. The team finished fourth at the tournament including a 9-5 loss to the Abbottsford Outlaws who were the Provincial Champions the previous season. Well done girls!

The Ramsay Lampman Rhodes Breakers 95 team kicked off their Bantam B season with the Sooke Ice Breaker on April 17-18. This was a good start to the season and the girls played well in winning two games, tieing one, and losing one. The wins came against Strawberry Vale and Sooke C while the tie and loss were to Sooke B and Langford. It looks to be a promising season as our first year Bantam team competed well against the older teams.

RLR Nanaimo Breakers Bantam “A” girls fastball team finished the top Canadian team at Seattle Sidewinder girls fastball tournament May 1^st weekend. The Breakers took 5^th place overall at the 32 team event. The annual tournament included teams from Oregon, Alberta, Washington and BC. Players Prestlee Cooper, Jamie Bassett and Taylor White led the offence, each having tournament batting averages of 600. Lead off triples by Jenna Keen and Taylor White helped the squad out score their opponents.

A pick off play off the at 3^rd base from catcher Jordon Stotts and 3^rd base Hayley Dowling to end the 7^th inning allowed the WPVL squad to take the 5^th place finish. Next up is the Canadian Pride tournament at Softball City on May long weekend.

“Ramsay Lampman Rhodes” Nanaimo Breakers 94 Host Bantam “A” Provincial Championship

July 17-19, 2009 WPVL and its Bantam “A” girls fastball team, the RLR Nanaimo Breakers 94, hosted the girls Bantam “A” Provincial Championship. Including our proud host team there were 14 teams competing over the three days to become Provincial Champions at this elite level of fastball for girls ages 15 and 16. Although our girls did not put together a winning game in their four round-robin games they demonstrated their ability to compete at this level, especially given they were a first year Bantam team. Those people in attendance were treated to some very entertaining and spectacular fastball. The event showcased some of the best 15/16 year old female athletes in British Columbia.

The Championship was very well organized and therefore ran very smoothly. The facilities were in great shape and most everyone seemed to enjoy themselves. There was great cooperation between organizers, Softball BC, the teams and their families, officials, fans and, the great many volunteers. Thank you to everyone involved for making this event a huge success!

Provincial Championships

The Nanaimo Breakers competitive teams competed in their respective Provincial Championships in July 2009. We had girls fastball teams representing our association and community at the Squirt “B”, Pee Wee “B” & “A”, Bantam “A” and, Midget “B” levels. All our teams played with a lot of pride and demonstrated great sportsmanship.

The Breakers 97 team had the longest journey traveling to Prince George to compete in the Squirt “B” championship. The girls really stepped up their game and played unbelievable ball the entire weekend. They narrowly missed advancing to the play-off round with their 2 win – 2 loss round robin record. The girls won 8-6 over North Van Stars and 8-1 over the Richmond Islanders. The losses of 8-7 and 11-4 were to the South Delta Invaders and the Burnaby Oakies. The girls did not come home empty handed. They won first prize in the “Fiesta Fastball” costume competition and were chosen best “fiesta” team in the provincials. Way to go girls!

The Breakers 96 team competed in the Pee Wee “A” championship as a first year pee wee team in North Delta. Coach Vic Wilson was quite pleased with how the team performed. Although the team did not win any of its 4 round robin games they held their opponents very close for several innings before having one bad inning each game. It was a great provincial for the girls with respect to development and experience at this high level of fastball. Keep your goals in focus girls!

The Breakers 95 team traveled up the road to Port Alberni to compete in the girls Pee Wee “B” championship. The girls got off to a nervous start and lost 7-4 to South Surrey White Rock Thunder (the eventual silver medalists). The team regained its winning ways and won 3-0 over View Royal Heat and 17-0 over the Port Alberni Blazers. A third win would have advanced the team into the play-off round but the eventual gold medalist, Abbottsford Outlaws 95, would not allow it. The Outlaws won an explosive 11-1 game. The girls played very well and had a lot of team spirit. Well done!

The Breakers 94 team hosted the Bantam “A” championship. They were great hosts and represented the association and community very well. Although the team appeared as though they were going to come out on top in two of their games they did not put together a win in their 4 round robin games. As a first year Bantam team the girls showed they could compete with some of the top teams in the province. Great job girls!

The Breakers 92 were in Port Coquitlam to compete in the Midget “B” championship. As mainly a first year team the girls battled older teams and they came very close but did not get a victory in their 4 round robin games. The girls lost 12-2 to the eventual silver medalists, North Langley Lightning, in their first game. They then battled hard and long losing 6-5 in 9 innings to Coquitlam Classics 91. The team was in tough against the eventual bronze medalists, Richmond Islanders 90/91, but played to a respectable 10-5 loss. Playing for pride the girls competed well in an 8-5 loss to the Kelowna Steelers. Keep on playing for the love of the game girls!

If you were looking for nervous energy, intensity, excitement, and both good offense and defense the Championship provided it all! The Breakers 95 lost the first game 7-5 in a back and forth game and were facing elimination from that point on. The team didn't let it get them down and came out to win the next game 10-1. With the series tied at one a piece the Championship came down to the third and final game of the day. The final game was a tightly played contest but the Breakers' explosive offense came through with a couple timely quality hits. Danielle Powell hit a two-run home run to give the girls a 4-1 win and the Championship! Well done girls!!

Breakers 95 in Marysville, WA

The Breakers 95 ventured to Marysville, Washington to face some new competition on June 6/7. Although our girls lost all four games they could just as easily have won all four. After losing 6-3, 5-3, and 7-4 on Saturday to Khaos, Woodinville Reign, and Baker, the girls turned up their play against the very, highly ranked Abbotsford Outlaws in a tight 4-3 loss. The Outlaws went on to win Silver in this tournament as they lost the final game 9-7 in 9 innings to Total Khaos.

The WPVL Oceanside Stars won the Bronze Medals at the Gladys Cunningham Memorial Pee Wee C Tournament in Cordova Bay on from this June 6/7. We picked up two players from Richard Clouthiers team for this tournament, Candace Oldfield and Bethany Henderson who both contributed immensley to the teams victories.

Each game had a Player of the Game T shirt awared to one player on the opposite team. Players from the Stars that recieved Player of the Game T Shirts were Pitcher Candace Oldfield who won 2, Catcher Natalie Collins, Pitcher Megan Kelly and Pitcher Emily Snyder. A great experience was enjoyed by the entire team at a very well run tournament.

94 Bantam A Breakers Dust up in Richmond June 5th

Breakers 5^th place finish at the annual Richmond tournament. The team led off the tournament with a convincing win against the Victoria Devils, then ran into scoring problems with a 5-0 loss against the very strong Delta Heat. In the 3^rd game of the day, the Breakers held a 1-0 lead to the 6^th inning before giving up 2 runs to lose against the Richmond Islanders.

In the final game of the tourney the Breakers faced the undefeated 93 Fusion. The Fusion took an early 8-0 lead after 2 innings, before the Breaker’s bats and aggressive base running changed the game. A Prestlee Cooper lead off walk followed by doubles from Shelby Huffman and Jamie Bassett scored 3 runs in the 3^rd. With backed to back doubles in the 5^th by Taylor Leier and Jordan Stotts, the Breakers were within 2 runs before time expired and game ended 8-6 after 5 innings.

Third Time Lucky? - Breakers 95 Win Gold! (May 30/31, 2009)

After winning Silver medals their first two tournaments the Nanaimo Breakers 95 peewee B team broke through to win Gold in their third tournament of the season! The tournament was hosted by the Alberni Valley Girls Fastball Association. It was the Breakers 95 third straight attempt at winning a Gold medal but it wasn’t luck that they won it this time. The team won both of their playoff games in convincing fashion. In both games their offense struck quick to build substantial leads in the first inning, they added more runs over the next few innings and used their defense to maintain control of the games until the seven run mercy rule took effect after five innings.

The girls won their opening game of the tournament 11-1 over Sooke but they seemed to lose their team strengths of teamwork and focus in the next two games. The team attempted to come back in their game against View Royal but fell short in losing 8-7. In their final game of the first day they lost 6-3 to Peninsula. Sunday morning the girls re-grouped, found their focus and won their final round robin game by a score of 10-3 over Duncan. That win advanced them to the playoff games as the fourth and final seeded team. The Breakers 95 were up against the number one seeded Nanaimo Diamonds in their semi-final game. The girls played a very impressive game and won 9-1 to advance to the Gold medal game versus View Royal. The girls won the Gold medal by winning their third solid game of the day, this time by a score of 9-2.

Every player contributed to attain the winning results on Sunday but Hayley Craddock, Taylor Sampson, and Leah Kitsul had outstanding games over the weekend. Breakers 95 game MVPs for the tournament were Craddock (2), Sampson (2), Sam Owen, and Jamie Belfry. This weekend the team is off to Marysville, Washington.

Breakers win double medals at Midget tournament

Both the Bantam and Midget Breakers take medals at local rep Midget B tournament. In the semi-final game the Bantam squad lost (3-2) to Strawberry vale in a very exciting 10 inning game. In the Bronze medal game the Bantam Breakers gave up 3 runs in the top of the 1^st to Central Sannich Extreme, but worked their way back into the game by scoring single runs in the 4^th,5^th ,6^th and 7^th innings to win the game 4-3.

The Midget group won the round robin portion of the tournament with strong performances from both their offence and defense. In the gold medal game the Strawberry Vale bats were hot, out scoring the Midgets 9-3.

94 Bantam A Breakers 6th place finish at Softball City’s Pride and Power tournament. The 11 team tournament included 2 teams from Calgary. The Breakers lost 5-3 against the Calgary Diamond Devils and 7-4 against 93 Ridge Meadows. In the 3 other RR games (93 Renegades, 93 Richmond Islanders and Delta Heat) the Breakers faced stingy pitching and were not able to bring any runners home. On Monday in the playoff round, the Breakers bats were awake and they outscored the 94 Richmond islanders 4-2. In the final game with the 93 WhiteRock Renegades, the Breakers held the lead (3-2) up to the 6th inning before allowing an grand slam home run to lose the game.

Two weekends, two tournaments, two Silver medals! The WPVL Breakers 95 Peewee Girls fastball team played their second tournament of the 2009 season in Richmond this past weekend. The girls again brought home Silver medals.

Once again the team opened the tournament with a loss. They were up against a very strong team in the Surrey Storm and lost 7-0. Again the team settled in and rebounded to win two and tie one of their next three round-robin games with scores of 9-4 over Richmond Islanders 96, 5-5 tie with Ridge Meadows Rage, and 9-7 win over Richmond Islanders 95. The Breakers game MVPs for the round-robin were Taylor Sampson, Mariah Van Sickle, Sam Owen, and Mary Kine.

The girls came up against Ridge Meadows in the semi-final playoff game and won a well played 6-5 game to advance to the Gold medal game. Mackenzie Taylor took her pitching up to a new level and was a factor in helping the team advance. The Breakers could not find an answer to the Surrey Storms’ strong batting and lost 8-0 in the final game. Coach Johnson is pleased that they are getting contributions from throughout the line-up but feels the team is capable of even more.

Silver Medal Winners at Sooke Pee Wee Tournament (May 9/10, 2009)

The WPVL Breakers ’95 Pee Wee Girls fastball team played their first tournament of the 2009 season in Sooke this past weekend. The girls brought home the Silver medal which coach Johnson said was the result of an all around team effort. Every single player contributed in one way or another on the weekend.

The team opened the tournament with a 2-1 loss to the Nanaimo Diamonds. Hayley Craddock had a strong performance for the Breakers in the pitchers’ dual but the team couldn’t manage a timely hit when needed and twice left the bases loaded without bringing in a run.

The Breakers ’95 proceeded to win their next two games by mercy. The team won 14-2 in three and one-half innings over Cordova Bay and 15-0 in three innings against the Duncan Dragons. The team brought their bats to life and kept them alive throughout the remainder of the tournament with a team batting average of just under 500.

The girls again came up against the Nanaimo Diamonds in the semi-final play-off game. This time around they used their strong hitting and sound defense to get an impressive 8-1 victory and advanced to the Gold medal game against the Gordon Head Wave. The final match was a high quality ball game which the Wave won 4-2.

Johnson said the pitcher-catcher battery of Craddock and Taylor Sampson was strong throughout the weekend and that Sam Owen, Leah Kitsul, and Ashley Elliot had exceptionally good at bats and defensive plays in the tournament, but that it was the contribution from each and every player that resulted in the Silver medal.

Bantam “A” Breakers 5^th place finish at Softball City 2009 Spring Classic.

The Breakers lost 3-1 to the Delta Heat, both teams scored their runs in the 1^st inning, after that is was a pitchers duel for 6 innings, with no runs being scored.

In the Saturday night game, the Breakers came from behind to beat the Victoria Devils 5-3. A triple by Jenna Keen and doubles from Hailey Conway and Jamie Bassett helped the team outscore their opponent. On defense, Miranda Cuthbertson threw 2 runners out with throws from center field to home plate.

EXCITING NEWS FOR BOYS SOFTBALL!!

WPVL Softball Association is getting together with South Vancouver Island softball organizations to promote boy’s softball. We will host up to three one day weekend jamborees in Nanaimo with all participating organizations taking part. Nanaimo teams will travel to South Vancouver Island on certain weekends through the season (once or twice per month) going to locations such as Langford or Sooke for one day of softball. Boys from mites, squirt, peewee and bantam divisions will participate. This will be a great opportunity to play many other boys teams from Vancouver Island and have tons of FUN!

Learn to Play

Learn to play is program for boys and girls up to the age of 10 years old. The goal is to bring the FUN back in softball.

WPVL follows the Learn to Play programs 1 (ages 5 and 6) and 2 (ages 7 and 8). Each child regsitered for Learn to Play 1 or Learn to Play 2 will receive a WPVL Breakers T-Shirt and Hat for them to keep.

You can download a copy of the Learn To Play 1 program. Learn to Play 1 replaces Tball.

You can download a copy of the Learn To Play 2 program. Learn to Play 2 replaces peanuts and mini-mites.

You can download a copy of the Learn To Play 3 program. Learn to Play 3 is not adopted by WPVL but is designed for the Mites level.

Bantam B Girls

The team won the silver medal Sunday in Port Alberni in the Provincial Bantam B Girls Championships. The players with this accomplishment will now represent WPVL and British Columbia in the Western Canadians in Airdrie Alberta with the North Langley Rebels the gold medal winners. The Westerns will take place August 1st till August 4th. The WPVL Breakers will now face the top two teams from these provinces Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba.

The team went undefeated in 5 games in a tournament in Whalley on June 14 and 15, before falling short in the final game losing 6-3 to Surrey Storm 93 to win the silver medal.

This is a photograph taken after winning the silver medal in an 11 team tournament in Ladner May 31 and June 1. This is the 3rd tournament in a row in which the Breakers 92 have medaled. The girls lost the last game to Mission Pride 92 4-1.

The Bantam B girls Breakers won the Bronze Medal on the weekend in an 8 team tournament that WPVL hosted on May 24th & 25th by beating Oak Bay 8-1 at McGirr Sports Complex.
